Transformational Leadership: A Review of Recent Literature
Abstract:
Leadership is considered by many to be the most critical component of organizational success. Many empirical investigations have been conducted, with researchers observing relationships of leadership measurements to a wide array of vital organizational criteria, including job satisfaction, job performance, and organizational effectiveness, among others. Fortunately, much has been learned, however, it may be difficult for those new to the field to find a solid and succinct starting point for study. The first aim of this review is to provide such a starting point by briefly reviewing the empirical literature on leadership. The second and third aims of this review are, respectively, to review the literature on what has become known as “transformational” leadership, specifically, and to suggest areas for future study of the construct. Transformational leadership is described as being a distinctly charismatic, authentic, and person-oriented approach to leadership, and has been widely linked to many key outcomes including leader effectiveness, subordinate job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and organizational effectiveness, among others. Future research is needed to understand the role of transformational leaders in addressing increasingly relevant social issues such as gender sensitivity, diversity inclusiveness, and corporate responsibility.
